CABLE 5
[Rokko Meets Art Art Walk 2017] Maywa Denki/Hippare! Rokko Cable Car
The author focused on Rokko Cable. It opened in 1930 and has been a popular tourist destination since before the war.
Using the winding mechanism as an automatic musical instrument, we created a video work in which the workers were likened to a mood singing group.

cable car technology
Cable car control equipment and operation
The control equipment for the Rokko Cable is manufactured by Cericci & Tanfani in Milan, Italy, which has been in use for over 90 years since its opening in 1932. The company nameplate from when the company first opened is still embedded in the outside wall of the driver's cabin.
The operating technology has been passed down to numerous operators, and the control device, which has been carefully maintained and used, is scheduled to be updated to the latest automatic control device in 2025 for the first time in 93 years. There is also a little more manual control of the craftsmanship by the driver.

Cutting the Rope
The total length of Rokko Cable's rope is approximately 1,800m. As the rope stretches over time due to the weight of the vehicle, it is necessary to shorten the rope once every few years.
What is important at this time is the processing of the rope end (rope end), which will be the connection part with the car body. Late at night after business hours, skilled workers ensure the safety of the cable car by cutting the rope, processing the cable ends (strand stripping, cable end cleaning, lead welding, etc.), and reliably attaching them to the car body.
